Babcock Central Flying Academy (Babcock CFA) started its operations at Grand Central Airport, located in Midrand, in 2002, under the name Central Flying Academy.

On 3 May 2005 the company was taken over by Babcock Brands, a division of Babcock Africa.

Mark Hughes, managing director of Babcock Brands, explains the rationale for the acquisition when he says:

“Our UK holding company operates a flying instruction company called Babcock Defence Systems that provides elementary pilot training through to more advanced levels for the UK Defence Forces.

We are looking to make our business more synergistic with that of our UK principals and we regard this step as the beginning of a process to align our businesses with those of our parent company.”
